10,000 Collars

Solo Art Exhibition

10,000 Collars Art Exhibition

In 2017 I had reached burnout point. I had been working full time since I was 15 and had been teaching from the age of 22. In 2013 I was diagnosed with cancer, had two operations within two months, caught glandular fever, was preparing for my radio active iodine treatment then suddenly lost my mum. I was bombarded emotionally, physically and mentally. I took about 3 months off work to recover and grieve and went back to my job working with teenagers in the community. Ironically my role was to support teenagers who were experiencing emotional and social issues through the medium of art, a job I loved. From there I went straight into a demanding and emotionally challenging role of teacher art full time in a Category B prison teaching GCSE/A Level Art, then straight on to start a teaching career internationally.

It was during my time living in China that I adopted my dog Draco. Draco had a horrific start to life, he was about 2 years old when we adopted him and have no idea about where he originally came from. What we do know is that in June 2017 he along with hundreds of other dogs were rescued off a meat truck not far away from its destination Yulin. In 2018 I took a year off to paint dogs and sell them to raise funds for the rescue group Karuna Rescue based in Shenzhen. Disillusioned by the world and the cruelty I reached a point where I needed to re-evaluate my life, reflect on everything that had taken place in my life and do something good.

I decided to paint 10 pieces of art based on the top 10 favourite dog breeds for 2019 voted by the British public featured on ITV. I was excited that staffies were voted no1 as at the time I had a 8 week old blue staffie puppy Tuco. I believe they also have a hard time and an unfair depiction of their breed #dontbullymybreed by that is another story and another exhibition idea.

For those of you not familiar with the top 10 favourite breeds of the British public here they are:

1. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

2. Cockapoo

3. Labrador

4. Springer Spaniel

5. Cocker Spaniel

6. Boxer

7. Border Collie

8. German Shepherd

9. Golden Retriever

10. Mixed Breed
